2009 – Rosebrook Road Timaru

Successful synergy of natural and man-made

A uniquely eclectic mix of materials and design and building effects are the hallmarks of the trade imprinted on this house.

Ranging from the old and natural – in the form of timber beams from the original bridge that was on the property when it was purchased to contemporary quirky, such as the display of a row of flowing lights which can be programmed to change colours, adorning the underside of the polished concrete slab kitchen breakfast bar, they represent an inspired use of elements old and new, natural and man made.

In the formal lounge, riverstone has been used to surround the gas fire; an exposed aggregate hearth blends with the original bridge beams which are used to edge it and as a mantelpiece above. Set against the crab-apple red colouring of the wall, the effect is dramatically striking.

Leading into the kitchen/living/dining area, double timber doors reminiscent of old, rough hewn barn doors, support the natural, rustic side of the decor. A feature wall of polished concrete block divides the living area from the hallway off which the bedrooms and office are located. A spot lit recess in the wall provides a display case for favourite pieces while creatively breaking the walls austerity.

Glass is utilised extensively throughout the house – in large expanse of windows and doors and in smaller strip style windows – to let in maximum light and afford views to the garden, grounds and scenery beyond and from the lounge/living section to open out to the patio entertaining and barbecue area. In the foyer, glass walls look onto water features either side giving the illusion of being on a bridge with water running beneath like a river. Completing the natural look and feel is the jarrah timber floor.

A major feature of the exterior is the massive river stone chimney and solid pillars at the entrance to the driveway. They provide an appropriate finishing touch, along with the original farm gates, to this modern day hacienda.
