Even the kitchen splashback offers lake and alpine views
Clad in schist, cedar weatherboard and plaster, and landscaped with rocks and tussock plantings, this holiday home might have been a natural extrusion of the Mackenzie Country.
The mono pitch roof slopes at the same angle as the hillside, interior colours are mainly grey and white, and every room is oriented to the extraordinary views of Lake Tekapo and its dazzling aura of mountains.
The back of the house provides level entry to the top floor’s two bedrooms (including master), two bathrooms and a kitchen, dining and living space whose two walls of glass stacking doors access a sunny timber deck. Supported by schist pillars and surrounded by a glass balustrade, the deck wraps around the side of the house to join the master bedroom.
The sitting‘ part of the room features a massive schist fireplace fitted with a Wide-screen TV; the spacious galley-style kitchen at the other end is equally up for entertaining. Its warm jarrah floor contrasts with white cabinetry and benches and gleaming stainless steel appliances and fittings. At ground level there are two bedrooms, a third bathroom and a second living area. The upstairs deck that partially covers the full-width aggregate patio provides summer shade.
