Wilson Building Timaru faced several tests of ingenuity in the design and construction of this large and contemporary two-level home.
They had to make the very most of 360º hill and sea views, ensure reef views from every room, provide outdoor living sheltered from wind, raise the sloping site to form a level building platform and successfully blend a not inconsiderable 554sq m of house into the natural environment. Job done.
To integrate the outdoors with the indoors, builders created a cedar, concrete, steel and glass exterior, Bluestone rock retaining walls, polished concrete paths and terraces and a courtyard, landscaped with stones, containing a multi-level flowing pond.
The courtyard is accessible from two sides of the four-bedroom house; a separate semienclosed barbecue area provides another outdoor amenity. Inside, earthy colours complement floors, stacked-block walls and fire-surround of polished concrete and the rimu used for stairs, doors and kitchen floor.
It’s an entertainer’s kitchen, with acres of bench space, a large pantry and great interaction with substantial open-plan living. The three bathrooms are designed and appointed to individual tastes and preferences.
